Biography

Sevan
Graduate from the Institute of Fine and Dramatic Arts of Yerevan, Armenia (1986-1992) with M.F.A. in Painting and Graphics. Continued education in Book Illustration (1992-1995).
Moved to Montreal, Canada in 1990 while still a student, and travelled back and forth to continue education. My culture, travelling, and nature, combined to my personal experiences and ideas, have their unique influence on my work. I paint and exhibit regularly in North America.
Artist’s Statement
Like a dream I remember how as a child I would be attracted to colourful and circular forms, remember the colours and later imagine them, and try to touch them. This evolved and developed with my growth. I feel that painting, like life and nature, is deeply connected with everything that makes our world. For this reason it does not matter whether a person paints a still life, a landscape or an abstraction; or everything and anything for that matter. Painting is when it is from deep within, the hand being the trained tool.
I try to show in my paintings the poetic beauty which exists in life, in sadness… In my compositions I express my inmost thoughts.
There is no such thing as art for art’s sake. Art does have a purpose. Although the process of painting is very individualistic, each painting, given that it has a thought, needs to be shared and viewed upon. The essence of each painting is my personal experiences as well as cultural heritage. The art of painting is universal and it belongs to all times, since humanity can remember itself.

Organising workshops, arranging still life, portrait and life model
Teaching the basics of drawing & painting; mixing different paints, composition, proportions, perspective, observation, forms and shading
