Artist member of the Association des Artistes de l’Atelier du Frère Jérome inc. Artist member of the international group Galeriazero of Barcelona, Spain. Odette Frigon approaches painting through gesture: it is the hand that paint. Has a non-conventional approach to painting, following the ideology of the Automatists who wanted to create a typically Quebec approach to painting based on instinct and sensitivity, inspiration coming from within. Learning to see. At Brother Jerome’s school, the accent was on the plan and the composition, without there being much difference between the two. Use of color. “dirtying” one’s colors Jerome-style, creates a frayed effect, attracted by the canvas. By dint of working in a non-academic way, simply and repetitively, aims to achieve a luminous stage where art unites with life, where everything is simultaneously movement and rest. According to Brother Jerome’s approach, the imaginary joins the child’s work. Children can amuse themselves trying to find a title or the continuity of a painting. He used to say that we are all right when we are born but society deforms us. Psychology more than aesthetics predominates in Odette’s compositions, bringing her close to the vibrant art of the early modern era in Quebec. Whit this approach, she achieves a maximum of spontaneity and sensitivity. Work on her canvases always begins either on a table or on the floor. She applies pain with crude, hasty strokes to let the forms and the energy necessary for the achievement of her work to emerge. The line becomes writing that joins Primitive Art. Spattering the paint gives volume to the flat surface of the canvas. To contribute to the creation of a world free of vengeance and violence, Odette strives for equilibrium and justice in all her work. Odette has a workshop in the Mauricie Region where she works on her larger formats during the summer months. She also has a workshop in Montreal where light comes from above, from the left and from the right and where the walls are covered with drawings for future paintings. On the floor, there is a stereo system which resonates whit jazz, a music from associated with contemporary art.
