ARTISTIC STATEMENT |
||||||
I’m British and I’ve been living here in Montreal for the past two years. Although I’ve been painting on and off for many years my new life here in Montreal has inspired me to take my life’s passion to the next level and paint full-time. I have always loved painting and drawing. By the age of five I was passionately drawing people. I became a fashion designer, graduating in 1984 with a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design. I went on to have an amazing fashion career in London, England, which also gave me a great opportunity to travel and work in different parts of the world. Throughout my life I’ve been painting, drawing and photographing people. I’ve always sought artistic new directions for my fashion work too, whether it was the presentation of my watercolor sketches in home-bound notebooks, the creation of beautifully engineered one-off garments, photographing my own creations or producing hand-painted textiles. In England I regularly attended life drawing and painting sessions instructed by notable watercolorists, oil painters and illustrators. In 1993 I attended summer school at the prestigious Slade School Of Art in London and subsequently was offered a place on their BA (Hons) Fine Arts course. In Montreal I have been regularly attending the life drawing drop-in sessions at Studio Technique in The Arts Building, Rue St Catherine and in December 2010, I participated in a group exhibition at Galerie Gora in Rue Sherbrooke. My great love is figure painting and I admire most the works of Lucien Freud, Alice Neel, Paula Rego and Jenny Saville as well as many of the French Impressionists. I’m also captivated by Montreal’s unique architecture and it’s inspired me to produce a number of paintings of local buildings and residences. I currently work in oils on fairly large canvasses. I’m passionate about the language and drama of the brush mark and continually challenge myself to express the mood and character of my subjects using bold color and intuitive paint marks. |
